$pi$$sup -$-NUCLEUS INTERACTIONS AT 4.5 Bev (thesis)

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4632910

Strips of G5 emulsion were exposed to a pi /sup -/ beam produced by a 6.2-Bev proton beam incident on Be. The observed multiplicities of charged pions from pi /sup -/ - N interactions are compared with values obtained from the various theories (reviewed) of meson production. The angular dependence of the shower particles, mean free paths in the emulsion, multiplicities, and star size distributions from the experiment are compared with results of other experiments at and below 4.5 Bev. The multiple theory of meson production adequately describes the experimental results provided that meson creation is accompanied by a reabsorption mechanism. (D.C.W.)
