Results are given of the measurements of artificial gross BETA radioactivity in aerosols in the lower atmosphere made by the Electronic Physics Service of the Electronic Department, and by the Atmospheric Physics Laborntory of the Paris Science Faculty. The measurements were begun in September 1956 and were continued in an increasing number of stations both in France and in the rest of the world: The reported results deal with the period up to the end of August 196l, that is, up to the end of the nuclear moratorium. After a review of the constitution and the properties of radioactive aerosols present in the atmosphere, a description is given of the measurement methods, their accuracy, and various aspects of the results.
