The manufacturing of Sc, Y and Gd single crystals (99.3 to 99.5% pure) by electron-beam zone reiining and high vacuum distillation of the rare earth metals and crystal growing by high tempemature recrystallization vaccum annealing at 1000 to 1400 deg C is reported. Microhardness, microstructure, crystal structure, plasticity, magnetization, hardness, thermal expansion, and electric resistance of the single crystals were determined. (Rev.
