POSSIBILITY OF THE APPEARANCE OF THE LIQUID PHASE BEGINNING WITH 430 C IN COMMERCIAL BERYLLIUM (in French)
Studies were made on a synthetic Al--Be --Si alloy with 10% Al and 3% Si in order to determine the temperature of the appearance of the liquid phase in the grain boundaries in commercial Be. The fusion point of the eutectic was found by x-ray diffraction. The diffraction chamber used permitted the sample to be heated in a sub-vacuum. A Debye-Scherrer diagram raised to the ambient temperature showed the lines (511-333) and (422) of Al and some spots due to the large crystal of the Be matrix. When the temperature was raised to 460 deg C, the lines disappeared. This indicates that at 460 deg C it is in the liquid stage. In the course of chilling it is even to 430 deg C and below that the intense lines of Al reappear. Thus the temperature of solidification of the ternary eutectic of Al --Be --Si is between 440 and 430 deg C. (P.C.H.)
