NEUTRON MONITOR, MODEL 5 (Engineering Materials)

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4625486

The portable instrument is used to make quick, accurate, dose-rate measurements of neutrons with energies from thermal to 7.0 Mev. Dose rates are reported in terms of rems. The instrument responds to thermal neutron energies within plus or minus 4% and to fast neutron energies within plus or minus 15%. Information obtained with this instrument is ordinarily more accurate than that obtained with the thermal and fast neutron monitoring instruments usually used. Where the scattering of intermediate energy neutrons contributes significantly to the total dose, this instrument detects and evaluates the dose rate with reasonable accuracy and with no assumptions or calculations required. The detector is a lithium iodide crystal 4 mm in dia. and 4 mm thick. The crystal is more than 80% black'' for thermal neutrons. The crystal is coupled to a photomultiplier tube by a light pipe wrapped in aluminum foil to limit light loss. The light pipe containing the lithium iodide crystal is inserted into a 10 in. polyethylene sphere which is calibrated with either thermal or fast neutron fluxes. The output of the photomultiplier tube is fed through a standard preamplifier and amplifier. (F.L.S.)
