A prestressed concrete pressure vessel has a cylindrical shape and is closed at the bottom and the top by vaulted portions having an inner convex surface. A fluid tight liner is provided within the vessel enclosing the reactor core. A portion of the liner is spaced from the inner surface of the vessel, the interspaces formed in this manner being filled with an inert material serving only for the transmission of pressure from the liner to the pressure vessel wall. Preferably the interspaces are disposed at the bottom and the top and have suitably a double-concave or plane-concave lenticular shape, such as to allow plane or convex bottom or top surfaces of the liner, while vertical ducts may pass the interspaces giving access to the reactor core.
