AN 8$sup +$ STATE IN Si$sup 2$$sup 8$
The system Si/sup 28/ formed in the course of Al/sup 27/(p, alpha )Mg/ sup 24/ and in C /sup 12/ (O/sup 16/, alpha )Mg/sup 24/ was studied. The existence of a 13.70-Mev resonance in the O/sup 16/ elastic scattering was corfirmed, and the angular distribution of the ground state alpha particles indicates that an 8/sup +/ state in the compound system is responsible for these decay alphas. The results for the (p, alpha ) reaction indicate a complicated reaction mechanism and show that the Si/sup 28/ compound system can be studied with little discrimination by this process. (D.C.W.)
