MEASUREMENT OF THE TRIPLE-SCATTERING PARAMETER A IN PROTON-PROTON AND PROTON-CARBON SCATTERING AT 139 Mev
The proton-proton triple-scattering parameter A was measured at a laboratory energy of 139 Mev over a range of scattering angles theta /sub 2/. The following values were obtained: theta /sub 2/(lab) = 15 deg , -0.368 plus or minus 0.032; 20 deg , --0.344 plus or minus 0.03l; 25 deg , --0.311 plus or minus 0.035; 30 deg , -0.231 plus or minus 0.046; 35 deg , -0.187 plus or minus 0.058; 40 deg , --0.099 plus or minus 0.079. The parameter was also determined for p-carbon scattering at theta /sub 2/(lab) = 15 deg with a laboratory scattering energy of 138 1/2 Mev. The value obtained was --0.531 plus or minus 0.048. The measurements are subject to a systematic error that could shift all values of A up or down together by perhaps 4%. In the errors listed above, this systematic error was combined quadratically with the other errors, which are of a nonsystematic nature. (auth)
