RESULTS OF FLOW-RATE MEASUREMENTS ON A 7-ROD BUNDLE UP TO 30 ATMOSPHERES PRESSURE WITH INLET SUBCOOLING AND NATURAL CONVECTION. Special Technical Report No. 5

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4620723
Flow-rate measurements on a seven-rod-bundle test section, whose geometry was very close to a Halden Boiling Water Reactor second charge fuel element were carried out for 140 deg C (3.7 atm), 180 deg C (10.2 atm), 200 deg C (15.9 atm) and 230 deg C (28.5 atm) with inlet subcooling very close to zero. For 140 deg C the measurements were also carried out with 30 and 60 kw subcooling and for 230 deg C at 50 kw subcooling. The rods were heated electrically (d-c) and connected in parallel to give equal heat rating of the rods. For safety one of the outer rods had a hof patch, which was obtained by machining the outside of the tube wall so that the increased electrical resistance produced a locally high heat flux. The method of operating was to stabilize the system at the required pressure and subcooling for different power and taking measurements of power, velocity, and temperatures at several places in the circuit. During these experiments the stability of the channel was checked by means of the signal of a differential pressure gage and a burnout detector. From the results of these experiments the steam quality and the nonboiling length were determined. (auth)
