SOME BURN-OUT AND INSTABILITY EXPERIMENTS ON A 7-ROD CLUSTER

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4109162
Burn-out and hydraulic stability experiments under natural convection were carried out at saturation temperatures of 230, 200, 180, and 140 deg C with a 7-rod bundle test section where geometry was very close to a Halden Boiling Water Reactor second charge fuel element. The inlet sub-cooling was varied. Local high heat fluxes to probe burn-out were obtained by the hot patch technique. The majority of the burn-out trips occurred with the top half of the middle rod of the bundle overheating under conditions of noisy periodic flow oscillations. The effect of an exit constriction in the test section was to make the system less stable hydraulically. (auth)
