Deregulation of electrical utilities is going to affect all our lives. In particular owners of Thermal Energy Storage (TES) systems must be wondering how it will affect the operation and economy of existing systems. Real Time Pricing (RTP) is a new unique program designed to investigate customers response to changing prices. The utility calculates and transmits the energy prices for 24 hourly periods to customers usually by 1:00 pm every weekday. The prices are in effect for the following calendar day(s), midnight-to-midnight. RTP prices are developed from daily cost information and can vary hourly depending on such system conditions as weather and demand. The TES industry will have to come to grips with the new conditions that the new Real Time Pricing (RTP) rate schedules will impose. This paper investigates the effect of RTP on TES systems. Graphs are shown to achieve a basic understanding of a typical new RTP rate structure. The effects are summarized and state the necessary action to be taken to operate TES systems economically under the new conditions.
