EPA guide evaluates alternative cleanup technologies for UST sites
EPA has developed a guide for state and local regulators to use when evaluating corrective action plans (CAPs) for leaking underground storage tank (UST) sites. The guide helps regulators determine if (1) an appropriate cleanup technology has been proposed by the party(ies) responsible for remediation, and (2) the CAP provides a technically sound approach to the cleanup. The guide has been widely distributed, and the agency hopes the document will reach every state and local regulator who reviews CAPs. Eight proven cleanup technologies applicable to leaking UST sites are discussed in detail in the guidance. For each technology, topics covered include applicability, advantages and disadvantages, design parameters, and operating and monitoring requirements once the system has been installed. EPA has even provided a checklist for each technology to help regulators determine if CAPs contain all of the necessary components. 1 ref., 6 tabs.
