X-ray absorption spectroscopy of Pr{sub x}Y{sub 1-x}Ba{sub 2}Cu{sub 3}O{sub 7-y} single crystals
- Forschungszentrum Karlsruhe, Dresden (Germany); and others
Substituting Y in orthorhombic (Y,RE)Ba{sub 2}Cu{sub 3}O{sub 7} by any rare-earth element RE has generally little effect on the superconducting properties. For RE = Pr, however, superconductivity is completely suppressed. To elucidate this effect the authors have studied the unoccupied electronic structure of Pr{sub x}Y{sub 1{minus}x}Ba{sub 2}Cu{sub 3}O{sub 7{minus}y} (x = 0.0, 0.4, 0.8) by polarization-dependent O1s x-ray absorption spectroscopy on detwinned single crystals. Along with the comparison of undoped (y {approx} 0.9) to the doped materials (y {approx} 0.1), this allows a test of the current theoretical explanations for the suppression of superconductivity. While the authors can rule out models involving hole filling or charge transfer from planes to chains the authors data is consistent with approaches based on Pr4f-O2p{sub {pi}} hybridization.
