Management and disposition of excess weapons plutonium: Reactor-related options
On July 10, the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) released a major technical report on the preferred options for the disposal of weapons plutonium by using it as fuel in existing civil power reactors or by immobilizing it with existing high-level radioactive wastes in glass {open_quotes}logs.{close_quotes} The study, entitled Management and Disposition of Excess Weapons Plutonium: Reactor-Related Options, supplements the 1994 report by the NAS Committee on International Security and Arms Control on the management and disposition of excess weapons plutonium (see ACT, March 1994). The follow-on study, conducted by the committee`s Panel on Reactor-Related Options for the Disposition of Excess Weapons Plutonium, provides a detailed technical analysis of both options; a comparison of each option`s security, economic and environmental, safety and health implications; and the panel`s recommendations and conclusions.
