A novel approach to low cost millimeter- and submillimeter-wave subharmonically pumped mixer arrays is under investigation which combines the high performance of waveguide mounted mixers with the ruggedness of planar arrays. Each mixer consists of local oscillator (LO) and input signal waveguides and a suspended stripline circuit containing both filters and an antiparallel pair of GaAs beam-lead diodes. In array form, the probe couplers built into each mixer allow the LO waveguides to be connected in an end-to-end fashion to form a single waveguide path for optimum use of LO power. Prototype mixers under fabrication are designed for (i) 280 GHz operation using a 140 GHz LO source, and (ii) 100{endash}140 GHZ operation using a 50{endash}70 GHz LO source. Plasma diagnostic application areas include Fourier infrared interferometry/polarimetry and electron cyclotron emission imaging. {copyright} {ital 1997 American Institute of Physics.}
