Negative-ion stripping in beams

A computer code of simulation of the negative-ion extraction, acceleration and transport, has been developed and is compared to experimental results. The effect of negative ion stripping and of various atomic collisions is taken into account. In the transport region the space charge includes the effect of positive ions produced by gas ionization. The simulation including both the accelerator and transport region correctly reproduces the variation of the negative ion current as a function of the three electrode voltages. But the simulation does not exactly reproduce the observed stripping during the beam current measurements versus the transport region pressure. The observation of anomalous attenuation of a 15 keV H{sup {minus}} beam in a gas target leads us to infer that additional, secondary H{sup {minus}} stripping processes, related to low energy interactions between H{sup {minus}} and H{sup +}, and H{sup 0} and electrons produced in primary stripping processes, are active. {copyright} {ital 1996 American Institute of Physics.}
