Combining exclusive semileptonic and hadronic B decays to measure {vert_bar}V{sub ub}{vert_bar}

The Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix element {vert_bar}V{sub ub}{vert_bar} can be extracted from the rate for the semileptonic decay B{r_arrow}{pi}l{sup {minus}}{bar {nu}}{sub l}, with little theoretical uncertainty, provided the hadronic form factor for the B{r_arrow}{pi} transition can be measured from some other B decay. Here, we suggest using the decay B{r_arrow}{pi}J/{psi}. This is a color-suppressed decay, and it cannot be properly described within the usual factorization approximation; we use instead a simple and very general phenomenological model for the bdJ/{psi} vertex. In order to relate the hadronic form factors in the B{r_arrow}{pi}J/{psi} and B{r_arrow}{pi}l{sup {minus}}{bar {nu}}{sub l} decays, we use form factor relations that hold for heavy-to-light transitions at large recoil. {copyright} {ital 1997} {ital The American Physical Society}
