Technical Report ·
DOI:https://doi.org/10.2172/4502648· OSTI ID:4502648

The FFTF is the key facility construction program in the LMFBR program today. Criticality is planned for early 1973. The facility includes the FTR and the NPTF. The FTR fuel subassembly uses existing design and fabrication technology as much as possible. The present reference design consists of about 3 ft of small diameter, high density UO2 + 25 wt% PuO2 solid pellets made by mechanical blending, gas bonded and welded in thin wall 304 SS clad approximately 7 ft long. 316 SS is also being considered. Coprecipitation methods will be considered and evaluated. Each subassembly contains 217 pins. There are ~75 subassemblies per core. The core will have two zones that vary in plutonium content.
