Radiation damage profiles of the refractive indices of He{sup +} ion-implanted KNbO{sub 3} waveguides

The refractive index profile of n{sub a} of ion-implanted potassium niobate (KNbO{sub 3}) planar waveguides is evaluated for waveguides fabricated with ion energies between 2.0 and 3.5 MeV and doses between 7.5{times}10{sup 14} cm{sup {minus}2} and 3.0{times}10{sup 15} cm{sup {minus}2}. The measured mode index values are fitted to a quantitative model that correlates the index profile with the irradiation parameters. The reconstructed profile of n{sub a} is compared to the profiles of n{sub b} and n{sub c} which have been determined previously. {copyright} {ital 1997 American Institute of Physics.}
