Two sessions were held to discuss industrial needs and research and development opportunities in the broad areas of environmental and utilities industries. The topics to be discussed were to include electroseparations technologies that may affect environmental control, waste treatment, and remediation processes. The scope of the discussion was limited to those technologies that directly involve the application of electrical energy to effect separation; thus, separation processes that indirectly apply electrical energy, such as those requiring increased pressure, were not included. In addition, processes that remove contaminants by destruction or conversion were not discussed. The goal of the discussion was to identify electroseparations technologies for which research and development is expected to provide a large impact upon the environmental problems that face industry in general and the utilities in particular. It was noted that the driver for development of electroseparations technologies for these problems is different than for other industrial needs - for environmental problems the main reason for development and application of a technology is compliance with regulations, rather than efficiency and economy.
