Flow and temperature distributions around local coolant blockages in sodium- cooled fuel subassemblies

From 4th international seminar on heat and mass transfer in liquid metals; Trojir, Yugoslavia (6 Sep 1971). See CONFIn an experimental investigation, the temperature distribution downstream of a blockage was measured with sodium flowing in an annular channel, the inner part of which formed six subchannels. The outer wall was an induction-heated circular tube. A distinct recirculation was found in the wake behind the blockage. The mean residence time of the fluid in the recirculation zone was calculated from the temperature measurements. A comparison between the sodium results and those obtained with water shows that heat conduction is negligible for the transport of heat between the flows inside and outside of the recirculation zone. Another series of experiments was performed in a water loop with a locally blocked rod bundle. The extent of the recirculation zone and the mass exchange between the flows inside and outside of this zone were measured. (auth)
