From international conference on the bases of the biological effects of ultraviolet radiation; Brno, Czechoslovakia (2 Oct Glucose starvation prior to uv irradiation of lactobacillus acidophilus results in a shoulder on the dose- survival curve, but, in contrast to amino acld prestarvation, this shoulder is not prevented by simultaneous thymidine starvation. Caffeine treatment after uv irradiation also causes a shoulder and increases survival. The hypothesis is put forward that the excision system of lactobacillus contributes to the cell death after irradiation and that the inhibition of excision by caffeine allows other repair systems to operate. The shoulder is then the result of a nonexcision repair system. (auth)
