Behavior of alkaline phosphatase under the influence of local irradiation of bones
Alkaline phosphatase activity was determined in the femur and femural bone marrow of rats irradiated locally with single x-ray doses of 100 to 1000 R. Measurements were made 1, 3, and 14 days after irradiation. Doses up to 400 R were found to cause a transitory increase in the enzyme activity of bones. A significant inactivation of alkaline phosphatase in the bone marrow was seen 3 and 14 days after administration of 700 R and invariably following the dose of 1000 R. Regeneration of the osseous and bone marrow tissue that depends on the height of doses used is related to the increase in alkaline phosphatase in the osseous and bone marrow tissue enables an early diagnosis of post-radiation bone injuries.
