Optimal straightening vanes for turbine meters

The sensitivity of turbine flow meters to a set of disturbed velocity profiles can be used to give an indication of the errors that may occur in practical circumstances as a result of installation conditions. The International Standard ISO 9951 defines a set of perturbations that are suitable for this purpose. The Standard requires the manufacturer to specify the installation conditions, such as straight lengths, straighteners, etc. so that the change in error due to the standard perturbations is less than one third of the maximum error allowed for undisturbed flow. Using these straighteners, systematic experiments were carried out with vane type straighteners in the annular duct leading up to the turbine meter rotor and also for round holes in a plate preceding the meter module. It showed that for a particular length of the vanes or thickness of the plate, the swirl was virtually eliminated. A combination of such optimally designed vanes was incorporated in a meter. In addition, the design was made to cause intense radial exchange of momentum.
