New isomer. 84-min /sup 132m/I

Journal Article · · Inorg. Nucl. Chem. Lett., v. 9, no. 10, pp. 1057-1060
The discovery of a metastable isomer of 2.3 hr /sup 132g I/ is described. U metal foil, or uranyl nitrate, was irradiated in the circulating beam of the McGill synchrocyclotron at energies in the range 35 to 85 MeV. The I was chemically extracted from the target and the gamma -rays measured with a Ge(Li) detector. Another approach was to irradiate enriched /sup 130/Te in the Brookhaven cyclotron to produce the reaction /sup 130 /Te( alpha ,pn)/sup 132/l. Preliminary calculations showe d that 86 plus or minus 2% of /sup 132m/ I decays by isomeric transition to/ sup 132g/ I and 14 plus or minus 2% by BETA / sup -/ decay to levels in /sup 132/Xe. A detailed decay scheme is in preparation. (UK)
