Nuclear fuel compacts: overcoating drum modifications especially for large grain size distribution of overcoat powders

Available from the Commission of European Communities, Luxembourg. A common method for overcoating nuclear fuel spheroids which have been already coated with a fission product-retaining layer consists in tumbling a batch of spheroids in a rotating drum whilst simultaneously introducing the constituents of the overcoating, such as a graphite, a polymerisable resin, and a binder. Experience with this process shows that difficulties arise in using overcoating powder above a certain median grain size (about 70 mu m). The present process extends the range of grain size. It consists in introducing grains of dry powdered overcoating material including a binder onto tumbling spheroids of nuclear fuel and simultaneously applying a film of liquid solvent for the binder.
