Thesis.<>29:002411From electro-optical systems design conference; New York, New York, USA (18 Sep 1973). The concept of microinch machining is discussed in terms of surface finish, geometrlc accuracy, and dimensional accuracy. The requirements of the ultraprecision machine tools used to achieve microinch tolerances and finlshes are discussed, including spindle and slide accuracies, vibration reduction, precise temperature control, and dynamic balancing techniques. In addition, the advantages of the single-crystal diamond cutting tools used on these machines are presented. Past and present microinch machining capabilities at Y-12 are discussed, along with specific applications and experimental work performed. (auth)
