Comparison of oxygen determination methods for Ta--10W alloy

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4425843
The relative merits of present analytical methods for the determination of oxygen in tantalum alloys were evaluated at Mound Laboratory. Standards were prepared by doping Ta-- 10 wt% W alloy with approximately 200, 400, 600, and 1000 mu g of oxygen per gram of metal. Methods evaluated included: inertgas fusion using induction heating; inert-gas fusion using high amperage current; vacuum fusion; and neutron activation analysis. The inert-gas fusion using high amperage current yielded the best results and the equipment for this method was subsequently modified for use in the analysis of both radioactive and nonradioactive samples.
