Internal gas counting method for absolute measurements of the specific radioactivity of tritiated water

The results of absolute determination of the specific radioactivity of tritiated water on the basis of the measured disintegration rate of tritium by the internal gas counting method are presented. Two reducing agents, uraniurm and zinc, were used to convert the water into the gaseous state. The absolute dism- tegratlon rate of tritium per unit of the effective volume of the counter is determined by a compensation method by using three gaseous proportional counters. The specific radioactivity of water is found in two ways, (depending onthe marmer of determining the mass of the radioactive hydrogen) which give the same result within the limits of 0.3%. The total error in the determination of specific radioactivity is plus or minus 1%. A standard of tritiated water given with the error of plus or minus 0.5% is used for the measurement. The standard is obtained from the Central Bureau for Nuclear Measurements, Euratom, Geel, Belgium. The standard value and the value of our measurements of specific radioactivity agree within plus or minus 1%. (auth)
