The testing philosophy leading to the German specifications for nondestructive testing especially of welds in unfired pressure vessels is described. German specifications regard ultrasonic testing as more reliable than radiographic methods while the ASME-code gives preference to radiographic inspection. The performance of the method is reduced to a measuring technique with well described rules for the operator. The results obtained are compared with the acceptance criteria without considering the nature of the reflectors. (auth)
