Parametric instability of an electron beam modulated by an external electrostatic field

Translated from Zh. Tekh. Fiz.; 42: No. 11, 2264-2271(Nov The stability of an electron beam moving through a spatially periodic electric field is analyzed. The conditions for instability are examined, and the growth rate is determined as a function of the electric field. The energy distribution is studied for various modes of operation. Nonlinear saturation of the instability is examined. The results agree with the theoretical model for a parametric instability. (auth)
