Comparison between the rate of transfer of $sup 226$Ra from potable water or hay to cow milk (in French)

Radium-226 contained in feeding water is eliminated in milk in propontions of considerably less than 1%; individual variations can, however, exceed this value by a factor of two. The radium transfer rate from hay harvested in meadows contaminated by radioactive wastes is between three and six times higher: a possible explanation is the conformation of stomachs of ruminants that rapidly deal with water but subject grass foods to an extensive predigestion. Nevertheless the amount of radium-226 eliminated into the milk of cows fed with hay contaminated at levels of between 420 and 509 picocuries per kilogram remains within the limits set by the International Radiobiological Protection Committee.
