Experimental total photoelectric cross sections

The four available methods and analysis of the total atomic photoeffect cross sections of gamma rays in the energy region 10 to 3000 keV were reviewed. Values of the total and the k-shell photoelectric cross sections by the direct and the indirect methods as well as those of the L- and M-shell photoelectric cross sections were tabulated for Cu, Mo, Ag, Pd, Cd, U, W, Au, Pb, etc. The available experimental cross sections were compared with the theoretical values, and it was concluded that the theoretical cross sections reported by Schmickley and Pratt have the highest accuracy among the presently available data; the method of obtaining the shell-wise cross sections by multiplying the total cross section value by the ratio shell to total cross section is not only simple but also gives accurate values and the ratio of total cross section to K-shell cross section at the K-edge in U cannot be 1.235 as reported in literature and is not less than 1.26. Thus, an energy dependence of the ratio is inferred. It was also remarked that the following systematic experimental determinations are necessary to get more accurate information: total photoelectric cross sections at high gannma energies, shell-wise cross sections by direct measurements and values of the total-toshell ratios.
