Standard method for measuring thermal neutron flux by radioactivation techniques

Book ·
OSTI ID:4411683
The puroose of this method is to define a general procedure for measuring an unknown thermal neutron flux by neutron activation techniques, It is not practicable to describe completely a technique applicable to the large number of experimental situations that require the measurement of a thermal-neutron flux. Therefore, this method is presented so that the user may adapt to high particular situation the fundamental procedures of the following techniques: (1) technique using pure cobalt metal and cobalt-aluminum alloy (absolute counting of /sup 60/ Co is required); (2) standard foil technique using pure gold, and; (3) secondary standard foil techniques using pure indium, indinm-aluminum alloy, and dysprosium- aluminum alloy. The techniques presented are limited to measurements at room temperatures. However, special problems when making thermal-neutron flux measurements in high-temperaturs environments are discussed, The useful neutron- flux ranges for each detector material are given. (auth)
