Prestressed concrete reactor vessels for nuclear power plants compared to thick-walled and multilayer steel vessels

From 2nd international congress for pressure vessel and piping technology; San Antonio, Texas, USA (1 Oct 1973). See CONF731003-P1. All types of power reactors began their development using steel pressure vessels. Increaslng pressures and core geometries of high power stations showed the technical limits of the thick-walled steel pressure vessels and induced the introduction of the prestressed concrete reactor vessel (PCRV) for gas cooled reactors. Especially for thls type of reactor the PCRV has reached a high level in design and operation. After the phase of experiments with various types, the vertical type with pod boilers proved to be the best technical and economical solution. The PCRV is also under development for water reactors in several countries. The results of research proved that this type of vessel is applicable to light water reactors, too. With reference to the increasing safety standards for nuclear power plants in high populated areas, especially in Europe, the PCRV also proved to be more economical than the thick-walled steel pressure vessel. Also the multilayer steel vessel shows economic advantages because of entire construction on site and the low fabrication risk. The technical and economical results of our research on the PCRV, the thick-walled, and multilayer steel vessels are qualitatively compared. (auth)
