Centrifugal coal flash hydrogenation in a rotating fluidized bed reactor for a full sized coal liquefaction plant

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4410899
A short contact time (<5 sec), high-temperature (>1000 deg F), highpressure )<68 atm) reaction of hydrogen with coal favors high conversions to liquid hydrocarbons. The rotating fluidized bed is uniquely suited for obtaining these process conditions. The centrifugal force in the rotating bed maintains the coal particles in position against the high velocity stream of fluidizing hydrogen. The gravitational degree of freedom in a rotating fluidized bed yields extremely high heat transfer and reaction rates. One rotating fluidized bed unit 5 ft dia. x 2.5 high should be able to process 9,000 T/D of coal at 60% conversion efficiency for the production of the equivalent of 38,000 bbl/day of liquid hydrocarbon product. A design analysis of the centrifugal hydrogenation unit and the entire plant as well as a preliminary cost estimate is presented. (auth)
