$sup 14$C dating by liquid scintillation counting on synthesized methanol and its application on wooden remnants in ejecta of the Fuji volcano (in Japanese)
Methanol is synthesized from wooden remnants using LiAlH/sub 4/. Sample charcoal is burned in an oxygen current and the CI/sub 2/ gas formed is blown into diethyleneglycol diethyl ether (Diethyl carbitol) with dissolved LiAlH/sub 4/ . Then the lithium aluminum methoxide formed is decomposed by diethyleneglycol monobutyl ether (Butyl carbitol) into methanol and lithium aluminum alkoxide. Eight grams of synthesized methanol mixed with scintillator is set in a liquid scintillation counter and the BETA decay of /sup 14/C is counted. Fourteen samples of wooden remnants from different parts of the Fuji volcano were analyzed for their /sup 14/C age. Seven items are described for each sample: locality, mode of occurrence, state and species, collector and the time, /sup 14/C age determination, code number, and other remarks. Among the 14 samples, two from ejecta of A.D. 564 or 1.056 y.B.P. were measured for their age as 1.040 plus or minus 80 and 1.000 plus or minus 80 y.B.P., and ten samples from more recent ejecta were measured between 1.070 plus or minus 60 to 3.610 plus or minus 100 y.B.P. The remaining two samples from the older mud flow of Fuji volcano were measured as 17.700 plus or minus 300 and 15,500 plus or minus 300 y.B.P. (auth)
