The direct reduction by LiAlH/sub 4/ of a suspension of anhydrous sodium acetate in tetrahydrofurferyloxytetrahydropyran is described. This study has shown that the ethanol thus obtained is impure and that the yields are erratic. On the contrary the reduction of acetyl chloride 1-C/sup 14/ by LiAlH/sub 4/ in diethyl carbitol'' leads to about 71 percent. (auth)
