Measurement of $sup 58$Ni(n,p)$sup 58$Co reaction cross sections for E/sub n/ = 0.44-5.87 MeV using activation methods

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4405739
Cross sections for the /sup 58/Ni(n,p)/sup 58/Co reaction relative to the /sup 235/U fission cross section were measured for neutrons with energies in the range E/sub n/ = 0.44 to 5.87 MeV by observing the /sup 58/Co gamma-ray activity of natural-nickel-metal samples irradiated with fast neutrons. The neutron flux was monitored by measuring the fission yields from uranium deposits in a fission chamber that was irradiated along with the nickel samples. The activities of these samples were determined by measuring their de-excitation gamma-ray yields with detectors having known efficiencies. The procedures used in the acquisition and analysis of the experimental data are discussed in detail. (13 figures, 9 tables) (auth)
