Ultrastructure of chondrocytes of articular cartilage soon after irradiation (in Russian)

The results of electron microscopy about the change of chondrocytes structure of anticular cartilage of adult rabbits during the period of 1 to 72 hrs after a single gamma irradiation in a dose of 900 rad are presented. The fate of irradiated cells is different-- death under the beam or carbohydrate regeneration, hypertrophy of organelles (compensatory reaction), and dedifferentiation of some chondrocytes (reserve of regeneration). The effect of radiation during the studied terms manifested itself mainly in the upper part of the tissue (up to the columns). The cells of the isogenic group suffer the greatest damage. The authors' opinion is that not all the ultrastructure changes of irradiated chondrocytes of articular cantilage should be considered as damage. (auth)
