The N/sub iv,v/(4d) x-ray emission spectra of lanthanum and cerium were determined in the wavelength range 60-160 A. A strong self-absorption was observed in these spectra. The spectrum of La included narrow lines whose energy positions were in agreemeni with the N/sub iv.v/ lines in the absorption spectrum of lanthanum. It was assumed that these lines were due to the reemission of electrons excited by the electron bombardment from the 4d subshell to the vacancies in the 4f subshell. A similar but less pronounced effect was observed also in the spectrum of Ce. A considerable proportion of the N/sub iv.v/(4d) x rays emitted from La and Ce had energies exceeding the ionization threshold of 4d electrons. (auth)
