Synergistic inactivation of biological systems by thermoradiation

Conference ·
OSTI ID:4404538

From International symposium on industrial sterilization; Amsterdam, Netherlands (Sep 1972). See CONF-7209100-. When Bacillus subtilis spores were treated with heat, gamma radiation, and combinations of heat and radiation, there was a greater degree of inactivation with the combined treatments. When pulsed x rays were used in combination with heat, there was also an increased inactivation. The enzyme activity of lysozyme was determined after exposure to heat, radiation, or thermoradiation by assaying the ability of lysozyme to lyse Micrococcus lysodeikticus cell walls; the combined heat and radiation caused a synergistic loss of enzyme activity: advantages of thermoradiation in industrial sterilization are listed.
