A class of high energy elastic amplitudes associated with nondecreasing total cross section is constructed with three basic assumptions. It is shown that several models proposed thus far arc all special cases of this class. Quantitative constraints are obtained concerning the rate of shrinking of the diffraction peak and the rate of rising of the total cross sections. The analyticity of the amplitude in the complex l-plane is also studied. (auth)
