Nuclear instrumentation in the Fast Breeder Test Reactor (FBTR) at Kalpakkam has been designed to provide for the control and the safety of the reactor. At the detector locations in the biological shield, the flux is thermalized and conventional thermal neutron detectors are used for the flux measurement. Ranges of flux and the considerations in the choice of detectors and their location are discussed. Various measures (paramaters) available for read-out from shutdown to full power operation of the reactor are described. The safety actions and interlocks provided by the system and general realiability and safety criteria that have led to the system in its present form are discussed. The advantages of a reactivity meter as a means of protective action in preference to a period-meter are also discussed. Finally, a brief summary of the development effort and programme of tests being carried out to ensure reliability of instrumentation is presented. (auth)
