Elimination of $sup 90$Sr from the bodies of cows (in Russian)
In experiments with lactating cows fed on silage, the amount of /sup 90/ Sr excreted in the milk was 15% less than in the controls, which were fed a diet of silage plus hay, although the experimental diet had a higher /sup 90/Sr concentration. The total /sup 90/Sr excreted daily in milk, urine, and feces was 94 to 98% of that in the feed in the experimental animals and 91 to 98% in the controls. The bones, after slaughter, of the experimental animals contained 3% less /sup 90/Sr than the controls. The absorption of feed /sup 90/Sr in the gastrointestinal tract (1.6 to 5.6% of the daily dose in the experimental group and 1.4 to 9.2% in the controls) may be compared with some literature data indicating that 8 to 10% of the /sup 90/Sr in the feed is absorbed.
