Somatic interphase pairing of Vicia chromosomes as inferred from the hom/ het ratio of induced chromatid interchanges

Chromatid interchanges were induced in Vicia faba root-tip meristems with chemical mutagens and x radiation. The ratio of homologous to heterologous chromatid interchanges showed that those between homologues were significantly more frequent than -expected for random involvement of individual chromosomes. The data indicate thnt V. faba chromosomes are somatically paired during those parts of interphase when induced chromatid interchanges become realized. (HLW)
