From national topical meeting on mathematical models and computational techniques for analysis of nuclear systems; Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA (8 Apr 1973). In mathematical models and computational techniques for analysis of nuclear systems. An alternative method to the use of high-order finite element methods is presented for solving multigroup diffusion equations with pieccwise continuous material properties. Based on extrapolation of low-order finite element approximations, this method is shown to be much more suited to highly heterogeneous problems than high-order finite elements: numbers of unknowns as well as calculation times are reduced while the effect of the singularities on the convergence rate is minimized. Comparisons with classical finite differences and estimations of savings are very promising especially for the calculation of thermal water reactors. 23 references. (auth)
