Atropine-caused central nervous system interference with radiation-induced learned and unlearned behaviors

Journal Article · · Int. J. Radiat. Biol., v. 24, no. 5, pp. 463-468

The inhibition by atropine of radiation-induced conditioned saccharine aversion (RCSA) and unconditioned bizarre eating in the rat was investigated. Atropine sulphate interfered with the two behavioral responses, but atropine methylnitrate did not. This supports the conclusion that the central nervous system is the site of atropine interference. Funthermore, RCSA was inhibited when atropine sulphate was given either before or after irradiation and conditioning, indicating that the presence of the drug during the acquisition of RCSA was not necessary for this behavioral blockage.
