From international symposium on the hormone calcitonin and its therapeutic applications; Milan, Italy (Oct 1973). The present study provides documentation of a significant beneficial effect of synthetic salmon calcitonin (SCT) in combination with calcium supplementation in the treatment of spontaneous osteoportosis, and the results appear superior to other modalities that also act by inhibiting the rate of bone resorption. The superiority of SCT may reside in its more effective prolonged inhibition of bone resorption or in a decreased tendency of the rate of bone formation to decrease as a secondary response to the inhibition of bone resorption. The beneficial effects are maximal during the first year of treatment and do not lead to a restoration of normal skeletal mass. As a result, the risk of pathologic fractures and of future disability are lessened but not eliminated by SCT treatment. Therefore, a combination of effective inhibition of bone resorption by SCT with agents that independently stimulate bone formation deserves consideration in future therapeutic attempts to treat osteoporosis.
