New slimhole MWD tools are lean and mean

Today`s slimhole measurement-while-drilling (MWD) tools can fit into drill collars as small as 3-1/8 in., which is almost anorexic compared to 5 years ago. However, the definition of what constitutes slim varies from company to company. Adequate clearance between the slimhole MWD tool and the side of the borehole or casing is necessary to avoid stuck tool problems in slim holes. Schlumberger recommends a minimum clearance of 3/4 in. for open holes and 1/2 in. for cased holes. This clearance must be increased for curved sections, such as the build portion of a horizontal well. The paper discusses slimhole MWD applications, new MWD tools, and future improvements.
